Online petitions and your privacy

Key Points

  • This privacy statement only applies to petitions, open letters etc that are hosted on the SACC website (www.sacc.org.uk).The term "petition" refers to petitions, open letters and any other kinds of public statement that supporters have been asked to endorse online.
  • A petition is a public statement. If you sign one of our online petitions or open letters, your name may be displayed on the website or published elsewhere along with other information marked on the petition's signature page for display on the website.
  • To protect you from spam and other nuisances, we will not display your email address on our website. Nor will we display any other information that is marked on the petition's signature page as not being for display on the website.

In detail

  • Information you provide that is marked as not being for display on the website (eg your address) will be sent to SACC but will not be stored in the website's database. A "hash" generated from your email address is stored in the website's database. It is extremely difficult for anyone - even if they gain access to the database - to determine your email address from this "hash". The "hash" is used to help us avoid duplicate and invalid signatures.
  • All information that you submit when signing the petition may, at SACC's discretion, be submitted with the petition to the petition's targets (the person or people to whom the petition is addressed). This will only be done in order to provide confidence that the signatures on the petition are genuine and/or that they are relevant to the petition's target (eg that they belong to people living in a particular parliamentary constituency). The petition targets will be asked not to use the information for purposes unconnected to the petition.
  • Information you provide may be shared with people administering the petition on behalf of SACC or on behalf of any other organisation co-administering the petition with SACC. They will be required to respect the terms of this privacy statement.
  • If you indicate that you would like to receive news from SACC, information provided with your petition signature will be copied to our mailing list system. This copy of your information will be handled as set out in our statement Newsletter subscriptions and your privacy.
  • If you wish to receive news from SACC and you wish to provide SACC with your postal address but do not want that information to be sent to the petition's targets, please don't fill in the "address" box on the petition's page. Instead fill in your contact details at www.sacc.org.uk/subscribe.
  • Except as stated above, information will not knowingly be made available to anyone except with your explicit permission or under legal compulsion.
  • We will take reasonable, proportionate steps to prevent unauthorised access to information you have provided. But we cannot absolutely guarantee the security/privacy of this information, and cannot be responsible for breaches of security.
  • Information you provide may be held in databases of various kinds, including electronic databases. In supplying information to us, you grant permission for it to be stored in this way and treated as described above.
  • Please be aware that information you enter on our website is currently sent to us in unencrypted form and could in principle be intercepted.
  • If you wish to be removed from the petition, please contact SACC
  • Cookies- A cookie is a string of information that a website stores on a visitor's computer, and that can be accessed by the visitor's browser. Cookies are required for the proper functioning of the petition sign-up pages on the SACC website. Cookies created by the SACC website expire when you close your browser.
