Parliamentarians back Guantanamo men

175 Westminster MPs and peers filed an brief with the US Supreme Court supporting the appeal by the Guantanamo Bay prisoners. They argued that the detainees should be allowed to challenge their detention before a civilian court. The parliamentarians, who acted in a private capacity, include four retired law lords and the former ministers Robin Cook, Clare Short and Chris Smith. This initiative would probably have made it impossible for the British government to avoid a confrontation with the US if the case reached the Supreme Court.
