Dear Prime Minister,
We, the undersigned, believe it is manifestly unjust that British citizens should be held in maximum security prisons for years on end without being charged for breaking British laws, but this is what is happening today.
In the case of Babar Ahmad the evidence against him was transferred to the US authorities before the Crown Prosecution Service could even consider the case against him. The predicaments of Syed Talha Ahsan and Gary McKinnon, who both suffer from Asperger's Syndrome, as well as Richard O'Dwyer are equally dire - they are in endless limbo with extradition hanging over their heads.
We believe the 2003 UK-US Extradition Treaty is unfair because it does not provide a level playing field when it comes to the rights of British citizens.
To extradite any of these men to a foreign jurisdiction thousands of miles away, where they are separated from family, friends and legal representatives, is in itself a punishment of the gravest kind.
We believe that to extradite such individuals to the US where they are likely to face up to three years in solitary confinement awaiting trial and subjected to a plea bargain system is completely contrary to British values. This whole procedure undermines our sovereignty.
This is not the way forward to build a socially cohesive United Kingdom on shared values of fair play and respect for human rights. We urge you in the name of humanity to halt the pending extraditions.
